1. Living organisms and energy production

  • Carbohydrates, fats, and lipids are the main sources of energy.
  • Mitochondria harvest energy from carbohydrates and fats in each cell.
  • Food alone is not enough for energy production; oxygen is also necessary.

2. Cellular respiration and ATP

  • Respiration occurs at two levels: body level and cellular level.
  • At body level, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the body and the surroundings.
  • At cellular level, food is oxidized with or without oxygen.

3. Aerobic respiration: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and electron transfer chain

  • In aerobic respiration, glucose is oxidized in three steps.
  • Glycolysis is the first step and occurs in the cytoplasm.
  • In glycolysis, one glucose molecule is broken down step by step to form pyruvic acid, ATP, NADH, and water.

4. Anaerobic respiration

  • Anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen.
  • Glycolysis and fermentation are the two steps of anaerobic respiration.
  • In anaerobic respiration, glucose is incompletely oxidized and less energy is released.
