Life of People under the Delhi Sultanate
- Indian society was divided into four major groups: aristocrats, priests, town people, and peasants.
- Aristocrats included the Sultan, his relatives, nobles, landholders, Hindu rajahs, chiefs, merchants, and bankers. They controlled wealth and power.
- Priests included Brahmans among Hindus and Ulemas among Muslims. They received tax-free land and had social influence.

Rise of Islam and Sufism
- Prophet Mohammad preached Islam in the seventh century AD in Arabia.
- He was born in AD 571 in the Quraysh tribe of Arabia.
- He migrated from Mecca to Madina in AD 622. This marked the beginning of the Hijira Era.

Political Background and Mughal Rule
- The Delhi Sultans ruled from 1206 to 1526. Their dynasties were Mamluk Turks, Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodis.
- In 1526, the Mughals replaced the Delhi Sultans.
- The Mughals initially ruled from Agra and later from Delhi till 1707. Their rule continued nominally till 1857.

Cultural Development: Architecture, Gardens, and Coins
- Indo-Islamic architecture developed as a blend of Indian and Islamic styles.
- Its distinctive features were dome, lofty towers or minarets, arch, and vault.
- Mughal rulers loved gardens and built beautiful ones with water channels and fountains.
