1. Definition and Basic Concepts of Sets

  • A set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects called elements
  • Well-defined means we can clearly determine whether any object belongs to the set or not
  • Sets are denoted by capital letters (A, B, C, etc.) and elements by lowercase letters

2. Representation of Sets

  • Two methods to represent sets: Roster Form and Set-Builder Form
  • Roster form: List all elements explicitly separated by commas in curly brackets
  • Set-builder form: Describe elements by stating common property using the condition x : property

3. Classification of Sets

  • Finite sets: Number of elements can be counted (can determine the last element)
  • Infinite sets: Number of elements cannot be counted (no last element exists)
  • Empty/Null set (φ or {}): Set containing no elements

4. Subsets and Power Sets

  • Set A is a subset of B (A ⊆ B) if every element of A is in B
  • Empty set is subset of every set: φ ⊆ A for all sets A
  • Every set is a subset of itself: A ⊆ A
