1. Magnetic Force – Lorentz Force
- A moving charge in a magnetic field experiences a force called the magnetic force.
- The total force on a charge q moving with velocity v in combined electric field E and magnetic field B is called the Lorentz force: F = q(E + v × B).
- The magnetic force is always perpendicular to both v and B.
2. Motion of a Charged Particle in a Magnetic Field
- When a charged particle moves perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field, it undergoes uniform circular motion.
- The magnetic force acts as centripetal force: qvB = mv²/r.
- The radius of circular motion: r = mv/(qB). Greater momentum → larger radius.
3. Biot-Savart Law
- The Biot-Savart law gives the magnetic field dB produced by a small current element Idl at a distance r.
- The magnetic field is proportional to current I, element length dl, and sin of angle θ between dl and r.
- The field is inversely proportional to r² (similar to Coulomb's law).
4. Ampere's Circuital Law
- Ampere's Circuital Law: The line integral of magnetic field B around any closed loop equals μ₀ times the total current enclosed: ∮B·dl = μ₀Ienclosed.
- This law is the magnetic analogue of Gauss's Law in electrostatics.
- Simplified form: BL = μ₀Ie, where L is the length of the loop where B is tangential and constant.
