Topics in Carbon and its Compounds
1. Carbon: Electronic structure and bonding
- Atomic number of carbon is 6.
- Ground state electronic configuration of carbon is 1s² 2s² 2p².
- Carbon belongs to group 14 or IVA.
2. Hybridisation and bond geometry
- The concept of hybridisation was introduced by Linus Pauling in 1931.
- Hybridisation means redistribution of orbitals of almost equal energy to form new identical orbitals.
- In methane, carbon undergoes sp³ hybridisation.
3. Allotropy of carbon and its forms
- The property of an element to exist in two or more physical forms having more or less similar chemical properties but different physical properties is called allotropy.
- Carbon in solid phase can exist in three crystalline allotropic forms: diamond, graphite and buckminsterfullerene.
- Amorphous allotropes of carbon include coal, coke, wood charcoal, animal charcoal, lamp black, gas carbon, petroleum coke, and sugar charcoal.
4. Versatile nature of carbon and the origin of organic chemistry
- Berzelius in 1807 classified compounds as organic if they came from living organisms and inorganic if they came from non-living materials.
- Berzelius proposed the vital force theory.
- Wohler produced urea in the laboratory in 1828 by heating ammonium cyanate.
Key Concepts
Central concept: Carbon forms a huge variety of compounds because of tetravalency, catenation, and covalent bonding, and these compounds show many structures, reactions, and uses.
