  • Ionic bond is formed between dissimilar atoms due to transfer of electrons.

  • Non-metal atoms usually gain electrons and form anions.

4. Covalent Bond, Bond Order, and Common Molecules

  • Covalent bond is formed by mutual sharing of a pair of valence shell electrons.
  • Shared electrons belong to both atoms.
  • A single bond is one shared pair, a double bond is two shared pairs, and a triple bond is three shared pairs.
