1. Discovery and Magnetic Field

  • Oersted’s experiment showed that a current-carrying wire deflects a compass needle.

2. Magnetic Field Due to Current

  • A current-carrying wire produces a magnetic field.
  • Around a straight current-carrying wire, field lines are closed circular lines.
  • Current out of the page gives anticlockwise field lines.

3. Force on a Moving Charge and Current-Carrying Wire

  • A magnetic field exerts force on moving charges.
  • If charge moves perpendicular to the field, magnetic force is F = qvB.
  • For general angle, magnetic force is F = qvB sinθ.

4. Electric Motor

  • An electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
  • A current-carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences equal and opposite forces on opposite sides.
  • These forces form a couple and cause rotation.
