2. Bohr’s Model and Sommerfeld’s Modification

  • Niels Bohr proposed an atomic model for the hydrogen atom.
  • Bohr was a Danish physicist and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.
  • Bohr’s model says electrons revolve in stationary orbits of fixed energy.

3. Quantum Mechanical Model and Orbitals

  • Electrons do not follow definite paths around the nucleus.
  • If position and velocity are probed very accurately at the same time, one disturbs the electron.
  • Hence, simultaneously the position and velocity of electron cannot be measured accurately.

4. Quantum Numbers and Their Meaning

  • The principal quantum number is n.
  • n gives the size and energy of the main shell.
  • n takes positive integer values 1, 2, 3, and so on.

5. Electronic Configuration

  • The distribution of electrons in shells, sub-shells, and orbitals is called electronic configuration.
  • The shorthand notation is nl^x.
  • In this notation, n is the shell number, l is the sub-shell letter, and x is the number of electrons.
