Key Topics to Revise
1. Meaning and Importance of Food Security
- Food security is essential because food is needed for energy, growth, and health.
- A country must produce enough foodgrains and also ensure that they reach people who need them.
- Food security has three main parts: production, access, and nutrition.
2. Bengal Famine and the Need for Food Security
- The Bengal famine of 1943-45 took about 3 to 5 million lives in and around Bengal, Assam and Odisha.
- It happened because the British administration refused to organise foodgrain distribution in Bengal.
- The famine showed how failure in food distribution can lead to mass death even when food is not completely absent everywhere.
3. Foodgrain Production and Availability
- Food production is the first requirement of food security.
- The area under cultivation has been roughly unchanged for decades, so yield becomes very important.
- Yield can be increased by better irrigation, water management, drought-resistant crops, crop rotation, and suitable local farming methods.
4. Foodgrain Availability, Crop Pattern, and Nutri-cereals
- Per person availability of foodgrains increased between 1971 and 1991 but was lower in 2011.
- This happened despite slower population growth in later years.
- India’s per capita foodgrain availability is very low compared to Europe and the USA.
