2. Bengal Famine and the Need for Food Security

  • The Bengal famine of 1943-45 took about 3 to 5 million lives in and around Bengal, Assam and Odisha.
  • It happened because the British administration refused to organise foodgrain distribution in Bengal.
  • The famine showed how failure in food distribution can lead to mass death even when food is not completely absent everywhere.

3. Foodgrain Production and Availability

  • Food production is the first requirement of food security.
  • The area under cultivation has been roughly unchanged for decades, so yield becomes very important.
  • Yield can be increased by better irrigation, water management, drought-resistant crops, crop rotation, and suitable local farming methods.

  • Per person availability of foodgrains increased between 1971 and 1991 but was lower in 2011.
