1. Sectors of the Economy

  • Economic activities are grouped into three broad sectors.
  • Agriculture and related activities such as fishing, forestry, and mining form the primary or agriculture sector.
  • Manufacturing processes and other industries form the secondary or industry sector.

2. Gross Domestic Product and Final Goods

  • Gross Domestic Product is the monetary value of all final goods and services produced in a country during a year.
  • GDP is used as an indicator of a country's income.
  • GDP figures for 2013-14 refer to the financial year from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014.

3. Value Added Method

  • The value-added method finds GDP by adding the value added at each stage of production.
  • Value added means the increase in value at each step of production.
  • In the paddy-rice-idli example, the farmer, rice miller, and hotelier each add value.

4. Changes in the Importance of Sectors

  • The share of agriculture in GDP has fallen drastically over time.
  • The share of industry in GDP has increased slightly.
  • The share of services in GDP has increased tremendously.
