  • Traditional water-lifting methods could irrigate only 2 to 3 acres with mota baavi.
  • Open wells traditionally had water at 10 to 15 feet deep, at most 100 feet.
  • Electric and motor pumps made lifting water easy, but this led to overuse of groundwater.

4. Pesticides, Silent Spring, and Endosulfan

  • Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring in 1962 about the impact of DDT spraying on birds and human beings.
  • DDT accumulates in fish and can be lethal to birds that eat many contaminated fish.
  • Mosquitoes quickly develop resistance to DDT sprays.
