1. Development, GDP, and HDI
- GDP measures the value of goods and services produced in a country.
- GDP does not show whether people have good health, education, or a decent life.
- Human Development Index is an improved measure of development over GDP because it includes social indicators such as education and health besides income.
2. Environment as Source and Sink
- The environment has two important functions: source function and sink function.
- Source function means the environment provides natural resources such as land, water, minerals, ores, plants, and animals for production.
- Sink function means the environment absorbs and renders harmless waste and pollution.
3. Groundwater Overuse and Unsustainable Water Use
- Traditional water-lifting methods could irrigate only 2 to 3 acres with mota baavi.
- Open wells traditionally had water at 10 to 15 feet deep, at most 100 feet.
- Electric and motor pumps made lifting water easy, but this led to overuse of groundwater.
4. Pesticides, Silent Spring, and Endosulfan
