  • The Constituent Assembly was constituted in July 1946 with 296 members from all provinces.
  • The Cabinet Mission of 1946 allotted 292 seats to British India provinces and 93 to Princely States.
  • Congress won 208 of the 296 provincial seats and held 69% of all seats in the Assembly.

3. Role of Major Leaders and Experts

  • Jawaharlal Nehru moved the Objectives Resolution in the Constituent Assembly and set the social justice agenda.
  • He said the future of India comprised all the four hundred million people of India.
  • He also described the Assembly as the nation on a move throwing away the shell of its past political and possibly social structure and fashioning for itself a new garment in its own making.

4. Objectives Resolution and Social Justice

  • The Constituent Assembly agreed on two objectives: attaining independence or freedom, and social revolution, meaning freedom from all oppressions.
  • S. Radhakrishnan proposed a third objective: socio-economic revolution.
  • This third objective meant a transition from primitive rural economy to scientific and planned agriculture and industry.
