  • A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population.
  • In India, the first census was taken in 1872. The first complete census, however, was taken in 1881.
  • Censuses have been held every tenth year since then.

  • The age structure of a population refers to the number of males and females in different age groups.
  • Population is generally grouped into three broad categories: Children, Working Age population, and Aged population.
  • Children are generally below 15 years. They depend on the family and usually do not earn income.

  • Sex ratio is the number of females per 1000 males in the population.
  • It is an important social indicator because it helps measure equality between men and women.
  • The census 2011 shows that in the age group 0-6, sex ratio was 919.

4. Working Population and Occupations

  • Those in the age group 15-59 are usually working people.
  • The Census groups workers into four categories: cultivators, agricultural labourers, workers in household industries, and other workers.
  • Cultivators are farmers who farm or supervise land they own or take on rent.
