Topics in Carbonyl Compounds and Carboxylic Acids

1

1. Nomenclature of Aldehydes and Ketones

  • IUPAC naming follows the pattern: Prefix + Root + Primary suffix (ane/ene) + Secondary suffix (al/one)
  • Aldehydes have -CHO group with suffix 'al' (e.g., methanal, ethanal, propanal)
  • Ketones have C=O group within the chain with suffix 'one' (e.g., propanone, butanone, pentanone)
2

2. Structure and Bonding of Carbonyl Group

  • Carbonyl carbon (C in C=O) is sp² hybridized with trigonal planar geometry
  • Three sp² hybrid orbitals form three σ bonds: one with oxygen, one with H/C (aldehyde), or two with C atoms (ketone)
  • Unhybridized 2p orbital of carbon overlaps with 2p orbital of oxygen to form π bond
3

3. Preparation of Aldehydes and Ketones

  • PRIMARY ALCOHOLS → ALDEHYDES: Oxidation with PCC (Pyridinium chlorochromate), Cu/Ag catalysts
  • SECONDARY ALCOHOLS → KETONES: Oxidation with acidified K2Cr2O7, H+/KMnO4, PCC
  • OZONOLYSIS OF ALKENES: Forms aldehydes/ketones; Zn/H2O removes H2O2 produced
4

4. Physical Properties of Aldehydes and Ketones

  • Physical state: Formaldehyde is gas; acetaldehyde is volatile liquid; C3-C11 are liquids; higher are solids
  • Boiling points: Higher than hydrocarbons/ethers of similar molar mass due to dipole-dipole interactions
  • Boiling points: Lower than corresponding alcohols/carboxylic acids (no intermolecular H-bonding)
