Group 15 Elements — Nitrogen and Its Compounds

  • Group 15 elements are called pnictogens. They include Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), and Bismuth (Bi).
  • Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the Earth's atmosphere as dinitrogen (N₂) gas.
  • Nitrogen also occurs as sodium nitrate (Chile saltpetre) and potassium nitrate (Indian saltpetre) in the Earth's crust.

  • Phosphorus has several allotropic forms: White (yellow), Red, Black, Scarlet, and Violet.
  • White phosphorus: P₄ tetrahedral structure, poisonous, garlic smell, phosphorescent, ignites spontaneously in air.
  • Red phosphorus: Polymeric chain structure, non-poisonous, non-phosphorescent, higher ignition temperature, used in matchboxes.

  • Sulphur exists as sulphates (gypsum, epsom salt) and sulphides (galena, zinc blende).

  • Group 17 elements are called halogens (salt-formers): F, Cl, Br, I, At.
  • Halogens are highly reactive and do not occur free in nature.
