13.1 NITRO COMPOUNDS - Classification, Structure & Preparation

  • Nitro compounds contain the -NO₂ group bonded directly to carbon: R-NO₂
  • Nitroalkanes: Formula R-NO₂ where R is alkyl group (CₙH₂ₙ₊₁-)
  • Classification into primary (1°), secondary (2°), and tertiary (3°) based on carbon type attached to -NO₂

13.1.5-13.1.8 Preparation and Properties of Nitro Compounds

  • LABORATORY PREPARATION OF NITROALKANES: Heat alkyl bromide/iodide with ethanolic KNO₂ (SN2 mechanism)
  • CH₃CH₂-Br + KNO₂ → CH₃CH₂-NO₂ + KBr (follows SN2 mechanism)
  • INDUSTRIAL PREPARATION: Vapor-phase nitration at 675K - methane + HNO₃ → nitromethane + H₂O

13.2 AMINES - Classification, Structure & Basicity

  • Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia (NH₃) where H atoms replaced by alkyl/aryl groups
  • PRIMARY AMINES (1°): R-NH₂ (one alkyl/aryl group; can form 2 H-bonds)
  • SECONDARY AMINES (2°): R₂NH (two alkyl/aryl groups; can form 1 H-bond)

13.2.3-13.2.5 Preparation Methods of Amines

  • METHOD 1 - REDUCTION OF NITRO COMPOUNDS: Nitroalkanes/nitroarenes + H₂/Ni (or Sn/HCl or Pd/H₂) → Primary amines
  • CH₃CH₂-NO₂ + 6[H] → CH₃CH₂-NH₂ + 2H₂O (using Ni catalyst with H₂)
  • METHOD 2 - REDUCTION OF NITRILES: R-CN + 4[H] → R-CH₂-NH₂ (using LiAlH₄ or Na/C₂H₅OH)
