1. Rate of Chemical Reaction - Fundamentals

  • Rate is the change in concentration of reactants or products per unit time
  • For reactants: Rate = -Δ[A]/Δt (negative sign because concentration decreases)
  • For products: Rate = +Δ[B]/Δt (positive because concentration increases)

2. Rate Law and Rate Constant

  • Rate law expresses how rate depends on concentrations of reactants
  • Rate law CANNOT be predicted from balanced equation - must be determined experimentally
  • Order of reaction = sum of powers of concentration terms in rate law

3. Molecularity and Reaction Mechanism

  • Molecularity = total number of reactant molecules in a single elementary step
  • Molecularity is always a whole number (1, 2, or 3) - never fractional
  • Molecularity applies to elementary steps ONLY, not to overall reaction

4. Integrated Rate Equations

  • Integrated rate equations contain time as variable - answer questions about concentration at specific times
  • Different forms for zero, first, and higher-order reactions
  • First-order reactions: ln[A] vs t is linear; slope = -k; intercept = ln[A]₀
