Key Topics to Revise
Types of Reproduction
- Reproduction is the biological process by which organisms produce offspring of their own kind.
- Asexual reproduction involves a single parent and does not involve the formation or fusion of gametes.
- Binary fission, budding, and fragmentation are examples of asexual reproduction seen in lower organisms like bacteria, hydra, and planaria.
Human Male Reproductive System
- The male reproductive system includes testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, penis, and accessory glands (seminal vesicles, prostate gland, Cowper’s glands).
- Testes produce sperm and secrete testosterone, the male sex hormone.
- Sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis before being transported via the vas deferens.
Human Female Reproductive System
- The female reproductive system consists of ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and external genitalia.
- Ovaries produce ova (eggs) and secrete estrogen and progesterone.
- Each month, an ovum matures in a Graafian follicle and is released during ovulation.
Menstrual Cycle and Fertilization
- The menstrual cycle is a monthly cycle (average 28 days) in females that prepares the body for pregnancy.
- It begins with menstruation (days 1–4), where the endometrial lining is shed if no pregnancy occurs.
- From day 5–13, follicular development occurs under the influence of FSH; estrogen levels rise.
