Basic Properties of Magnets

  • Every magnet has two poles: North and South. These poles are inseparable.

Magnetic Field and Field Lines

  • Magnetic field is the region around a magnet where its influence can be felt by another magnet or magnetic material.
  • Magnetic field lines are imaginary paths along which a unit north pole would move.
  • Field lines emerge from the North pole and enter the South pole outside the magnet, forming closed loops.

Torque on a Magnetic Dipole

  • A magnetic dipole (like a bar magnet) placed in a uniform magnetic field experiences a torque but no net force.
  • The torque tends to align the dipole with the magnetic field.
  • Maximum torque occurs when the dipole is perpendicular to the field; zero when aligned.

Magnetic Flux and Gauss's Law

  • Magnetic flux (φ_B) is the total number of magnetic field lines passing through a surface.
  • It depends on the magnetic field strength, area, and the angle between the field and the normal to the surface.
  • Gauss’s Law for Magnetism: Net magnetic flux through any closed surface is zero.
