Topics in Gravitation

1

Newton's Law of Gravitation

  • Every object in the universe attracts every other object with a gravitational force.
  • The force is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
  • The force is always attractive and acts along the line joining the centers of the two masses.
2

Gravitational Field and Potential Energy

  • A gravitational field exists around any mass where another mass experiences gravitational force.
  • Gravitational field strength is the force per unit mass at a point in the field.
  • Gravitational potential energy is the work done in bringing a unit mass from infinity to a point in the gravitational field.
3

Acceleration Due to Gravity (g)

  • Acceleration due to gravity (g) is the acceleration produced in a body due to Earth’s gravitational pull.
  • Its value on Earth’s surface is approximately 9.8 m/s².
  • g is independent of the mass of the falling body — all objects fall at the same rate in vacuum.
4

Kepler's Laws and Satellite Motion

  • Kepler’s First Law: Planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun at one focus.
  • Kepler’s Second Law: The line joining a planet to the Sun sweeps equal areas in equal times.
  • Kepler’s Third Law: The square of the orbital period is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis.
