Topics in Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

1

Electric Potential and Potential Difference

  • Electric potential at a point is the work done to bring a unit positive charge from infinity to that point against the electric field.
  • Potential difference between two points is the work done per unit charge to move it from one point to another.
  • Electric potential is a scalar quantity measured in volts (V).
2

Relation Between Electric Field and Potential

  • Electric field is the negative gradient of electric potential: $ \vec{E} = -\frac{dV}{dr} $.
  • The electric field points in the direction of decreasing potential.
  • In a uniform electric field, $ E = \frac{V}{d} $, where d is the separation between plates.
3

Capacitance and Capacitors

  • Capacitance is the ability of a conductor or system to store charge per unit potential difference.
  • For a capacitor, $ C = Q/V $, where Q is charge on one plate and V is potential difference.
  • Capacitance depends on geometry, size, and dielectric medium, not on charge or voltage.
4

Grouping of Capacitors and Energy Storage

  • In parallel combination, voltage is same across all capacitors; total capacitance is sum of individual capacitances.
  • In series combination, charge is same on all capacitors; reciprocal of total capacitance is sum of reciprocals.
  • Energy stored in a capacitor is $ U = \frac{1}{2}CV^2 = \frac{1}{2}QV = \frac{Q^2}{2C} $.
