- The earth's radius is about 6,378 km.
- Direct sources include surface rocks, mining samples, deep drilling, and volcanic materials.

2. Earthquake Basics
- An earthquake is the shaking of the earth caused by the release of energy.
- The point where energy is released is called the focus or hypocentre.
- The point on the surface nearest to the focus is called the epicentre.
3. Types and Behaviour of Earthquake Waves
- Earthquake waves are of two main types: body waves and surface waves.
- Body waves are generated at the focus and travel through the body of the earth.
- Surface waves are generated when body waves interact with surface rocks.
4. Shadow Zone and Seismograph Patterns
- A shadow zone is a region where earthquake waves are not recorded.
- For both P and S waves, the shadow zone lies between 105 and 145 degrees from the epicentre.
- Seismographs within 105 degrees record both P and S waves.
