1. Why This Age Is Called the Age of Reorganisation
- After the decline of the Maurya Empire, many big and small kingdoms emerged across the subcontinent.
- The last Maurya emperor was assassinated around 185 BCE by his commander-in-chief Puṣhyamitra Śhunga.
- Political power was reorganised into new regional kingdoms.
2. The Śhungas
- Puṣhyamitra Śhunga founded the Śhunga dynasty.
- The Śhungas ruled parts of north and central India.
- Puṣhyamitra Śhunga performed the aśhvamedha yajña to show his power.
3. The Sātavāhanas
- The Sātavāhanas ruled large parts of the Deccan from the 2nd century BCE onward.
- They are also called the Andhras.
- Their empire included present-day Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
4. The Chedis and Kalinga
- After the decline of the Maurya Empire, Kalinga rose as a prominent power under the Chedi dynasty.
- Khāravela was one of the main rulers of Kalinga.
- Khāravela was called bhikṣu-rāja, meaning monk-king.
