1. Weather, Seasons and Climate
- Weather changes from hour to hour or day to day. It may be sunny, rainy, windy or cloudy.
- Climate is the pattern of weather in a region over a long period of time, several decades at least.
- Climate is described using patterns of temperature, precipitation and wind over three decades or more.
2. Factors That Determine Climate
- Latitude affects climate. Places near the Equator are warmer, while places farther away are cooler.
- Altitude affects climate. Temperature decreases as altitude increases, so hill stations are cooler than plains.
- Proximity to the sea affects climate. Coastal areas have milder temperatures because the sea acts as a moderator.
3. Types of Climate in India
- Himalayan mountains in north India have an alpine climate.
- Lower Himalayas and many hilly areas have a temperate climate.
- The northern plains have a subtropical climate.
4. Monsoons in India
- Monsoons are seasonal winds over a large area of the Indian Ocean and surrounding regions.
- The word monsoon comes from the Arabic word mausim, meaning season.
- The summer or southwest monsoon begins in early June at the southern tip of India and covers the subcontinent by mid-July.
