1. Meaning of Pollution and Pollutants

  • Environmental pollution is the deterioration in the quality of the environment due to the addition of undesirable substances.

2. Types of Pollutants

  • On the basis of natural fate, pollutants are of two types: biodegradable pollutants and non-biodegradable pollutants.
  • Biodegradable pollutants can be decomposed into harmless substances by microbes.
  • Non-biodegradable pollutants resist biotic or abiotic degradation and persist in the environment.

3. Air Pollution

  • Air pollution is an undesirable change in the physical or biological characteristics of air that may affect humans and other living organisms.
  • Main causes of air pollution include combustion, industries, pesticides, suspended particulate matter, hydrocarbons and radioactive materials.
  • Burning coal, firewood, oil and garbage produces gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and smoke.

4. Effects and Control of Air Pollution

  • Air pollution damages soft lung tissues and causes respiratory diseases.
  • Dust and carbon particles deposit on leaves and reduce photosynthesis.
  • Acid rain can have pH as low as 3.0.
