Key Topics to Revise

1

Body Fluids and Types of Circulatory Systems

  • Body fluid is distributed in two compartments: Extracellular Fluid (ECF) - 25% of body weight, high Na+ concentration; Intracellular Fluid (ICF) - 67% of body weight, high K+ concentration
  • ECF includes interstitial fluid, blood plasma, lymph, and non-circulating fluids
  • Open circulatory system: No capillaries, arteries open into blood sinuses (found in arthropods, molluscs)
2

Blood Composition and Properties

  • Blood volume: 4.5-5.5L (women), 5-6L (men); pH 7.4 (slightly alkaline); specific gravity 1.05-1.06
  • Bright red when oxygenated (arteries), dull red when deoxygenated (veins)
  • Plasma (55%): 92% water, 8% solids including proteins (albumin, globulin, fibrinogen, prothrombin)
3

Red Blood Cells (RBCs/Erythrocytes)

  • Biconcave discs, 8μm diameter, 2μm thickness; enucleated in mammals
  • RBC count: 5 million/mm³ (males), 4.5 million/mm³ (females)
  • Contains hemoglobin (15g/100ml blood) with iron-containing heme + globin protein
4

White Blood Cells (WBCs/Leukocytes)

  • Colorless, nucleated, amoeboid cells; 6,000-8,000/mm³ normal count
  • Can perform diapedesis (squeezing through capillary walls) and phagocytosis
  • Granulocytes: Neutrophils (50-70%), Eosinophils (1-5%), Basophils (0-1%)
