1. Meaning of Pollution and Pollutants
- Environmental pollution is the deterioration in the quality of the environment due to the addition of undesirable substances.
- Two scientific definitions of pollution are important: one by the Environmental Pollution Panel of the United States Science Advisory Committee (1965) and another by the National Research Council Comm
- Pollutants are substances whose addition to the environment causes pollution.
2. Types of Pollutants
- On the basis of natural fate, pollutants are of two types: biodegradable pollutants and non-biodegradable pollutants.
- Biodegradable pollutants can be decomposed into harmless substances by microbes.
- Non-biodegradable pollutants resist biotic or abiotic degradation and persist in the environment.
3. Air Pollution
- Air pollution is an undesirable change in the physical or biological characteristics of air that may affect humans and other living organisms.
- Main causes of air pollution include combustion, industries, pesticides, suspended particulate matter, hydrocarbons and radioactive materials.
- Burning coal, firewood, oil and garbage produces gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and smoke.
4. Effects and Control of Air Pollution
- Air pollution damages soft lung tissues and causes respiratory diseases.
- Dust and carbon particles deposit on leaves and reduce photosynthesis.
- Acid rain can have pH as low as 3.0.
