Basic Concepts of Evolution
- Evolution is the slow and gradual change in organisms over hundreds or thousands of years
- All living organisms have developed from common ancestors through descent with modifications
- Evolution follows a pattern: unicellular organisms appeared first, followed by multicellular organisms
Lamarck's Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characters
- Proposed by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1809 in his book 'Philosophie Zoologique'
- Also known as Theory of Use and Disuse
- Four main postulates: tendency to grow, formation of new organs, effect of use/disuse, inheritance of acquired characters
Vestigial Organs
- Organs that are non-functional in present organisms but were functional in ancestors
- Support Lamarck's theory of use and disuse
- Human examples: vermiform appendix, coccyx (tail bone), wisdom teeth, ear muscles
Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection
- Proposed by Charles Darwin in 'The Origin of Species' (1859)
- Seven main postulates: overproduction, constant populations, struggle for existence, variations, survival of fittest, natural selection, origin of species
- Organisms produce more offspring than can survive due to limited resources
