What to Focus On

  • Natural vegetation grows without human help and follows climate variations.
  • Forests cover about 21.02% of India's total land area, but effective cover is only 12-14%.
  • India loses approximately 1.3 million hectares of forest annually.

  • Rainfall and relief are the two primary factors determining natural vegetation distribution.
  • Higher rainfall generally means denser, taller forests with greater biodiversity.
  • As altitude increases, temperature decreases, shifting vegetation from tropical to coniferous to alpine.

  • Found where annual rainfall exceeds 200 cm and temperature is 25°C–27°C.
  • Located on the windward side of Western Ghats, NE India (Assam hills), and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Always appear green because different species shed leaves at different times.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Tropical Evergreen forests are called 'evergreen' because they never shed their leaves at all.

Tropical Deciduous forests are less important than Evergreen forests because they lose their leaves.

Mangrove or Littoral forests grow only in areas with very little water because they have breathing roots to get oxygen from air.

Memory Tips

Tropical Evergreen Forests — never shed leaves at the same time

Tropical Evergreen Forest locations — Western Ghats, NE India, Andaman & Nicobar

Tropical Deciduous Forests shed leaves for 6–8 weeks in March–April

Teak wood properties — resistant to white ants, iron nails don't rust
