  • A matrix is an ordered rectangular array of numbers.
  • Rows are horizontal and columns are vertical.
  • Order m×n means m rows and n columns.

  • A column matrix has only one column.
  • A row matrix has only one row.
  • A square matrix has the same number of rows and columns.

  • Equal matrices must have the same order.
  • All corresponding elements must be equal.
  • A mismatch in order or any entry makes matrices unequal.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any two matrices can be added or subtracted if the numbers look similar.
