1. Basic Idea, Order, and Notation

  • A matrix is an ordered rectangular array of numbers.
  • The numbers inside a matrix are called elements or entries.
  • Horizontal lines are rows and vertical lines are columns.

2. Types of Matrices

  • A row matrix has only one row and is of order 1×n.
  • A column matrix has only one column.
  • A square matrix has the same number of rows and columns.

3. Equality, Addition, and Subtraction

  • Two matrices are equal only if they have the same order and all corresponding elements are equal.
  • Two matrices can be added or subtracted only when their orders are the same.
  • Matrix addition is done by adding corresponding elements.

4. Scalar Multiplication

  • When a matrix is multiplied by a scalar, each element is multiplied by that scalar.
  • The order of the resultant matrix is the same as the original matrix.
  • This operation keeps the shape of the matrix unchanged.
