  • Similar figures have the same shape but may have different sizes.
  • Two triangles are similar if corresponding sides are proportional and corresponding angles are equal.
  • Congruent figures are always similar, but similar figures need not be congruent.

  • Proportional sides are not necessarily equal.
  • Corresponding angles in similar triangles are equal.
  • Angle sum property can be used to show equality of corresponding angles.

  • SSS similarity uses three proportional sides.
  • AAA similarity uses three equal corresponding angles.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

If two triangles are similar, their corresponding sides must be equal.

If corresponding sides are proportional, the corresponding angles are only proportional too, not equal.

Any two triangles with one equal angle are similar.
