Magnetic Effect of Electric Current
- Oersted observed in 1820 that a current-carrying wire produces a magnetic field around it.
- A magnetic field around a straight conductor forms concentric circles.
- The strength of magnetic field increases when current increases.

Electromagnets and Permanent Magnets
- An electromagnet is a temporary magnet made by winding a current-carrying wire around a cylindrical piece of soft iron.
- Soft iron has low retentivity, so an electromagnet loses magnetism when current stops.
- A bar electromagnet is mainly used in relay systems.

Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor
- A current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force.
- This force is called magnetic force or Lorentz force.
- The force is maximum when current and magnetic field are perpendicular.

Electromagnetic Induction
- Faraday thought in reverse of Oersted’s discovery and studied how changing magnetic field can produce current.
- Electromagnetic induction is the phenomenon in which an e.m.f. is induced when magnetic flux linked with a coil changes.
- If a magnet and coil are at rest relative to each other, no induced current is produced.
