Key Topics to Revise

1

Introduction to Machines

  • A machine is a device that helps overcome a large load by applying a small effort at a convenient point
  • Machines can work as force multipliers (M.A. > 1) or speed multipliers (M.A. < 1)
  • Simple machines: Can be handled manually (lever, pulley, inclined plane, screw, wedge)
2

Levers

  • A lever is a rigid bar that rotates about a fixed point called fulcrum
  • Works on the principle of moments: Clockwise moment = Anticlockwise moment
  • Three types: Class I (fulcrum between effort and load), Class II (load between fulcrum and effort), Class III (effort between fulcrum and load)
3

Pulleys

  • A pulley is a wheel with a grooved rim around which a rope passes
  • Single fixed pulley: M.A. = V.R. = 1, changes direction of effort
  • Single movable pulley: M.A. = V.R. = 2 (ideal), works as force multiplier
