Heat, Temperature and Units of Heat
- Heat is energy in transit due to random molecular motion.
- Heat flows from a hot body to a cold body.
- Temperature determines the direction of heat flow.
Heat Capacity and Specific Heat Capacity
- Quantity of heat depends on mass, nature of material, and change in temperature.
- Heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of the whole mass of a body by 1°C or 1 K.
- Specific heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of unit mass of a body by 1°C or 1 K.
Calorimeter and Principle of Calorimetry
- A calorimeter is a cylindrical copper vessel used to measure heat lost or gained.
- It is made of copper because copper is a good conductor and has very low specific heat.
- A calorimeter is kept in a wooden box with insulating material to reduce heat loss.
Specific Heat Capacity by Method of Mixtures and Electric Method
- The specific heat capacity of a solid can be found by the method of mixtures.
- In this method, a heated solid is placed in water inside a calorimeter and the final temperature is measured.
- Heat lost by the solid equals heat gained by water and calorimeter.
