Magnetic Effect of Electric Current

  • Oersted observed in 1820 that a current-carrying wire produces a magnetic field around it.
  • A magnetic field around a straight conductor forms concentric circles.
  • The strength of magnetic field increases when current increases.

  • An electromagnet is a temporary magnet made by winding a current-carrying wire around a cylindrical piece of soft iron.
  • Soft iron has low retentivity, so an electromagnet loses magnetism when current stops.
