1. Refraction of Light at Plane Surfaces

  • At the interface of two media, light undergoes partial reflection and partial refraction.
  • Refraction is caused by change in the speed of light, which depends on the refractive index of the medium.
  • When light travels from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards the normal.

2. Laws of Refraction and Snell's Law

  • There are two laws of refraction.
  • The incident ray, refracted ray, and the normal at the point of incidence lie in the same plane.
  • The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to sine of angle of refraction for a pair of media is constant.

3. Quantities Changed by Refraction

  • Speed of light changes during refraction.
  • Direction of light changes only for oblique incidence.
  • Wavelength decreases when light passes from rarer to denser medium.

4. Principle of Reversibility and Relative Refractive Index

  • Light retraces its path when the direction of travel is reversed.
  • This is called the principle of reversibility of light.
  • Relative refractive index of one medium with respect to another is the reciprocal of the reverse value.
