1. Force and Types of Forces

  • Force is a push or pull applied by one body on another body.
  • A force can change the state of motion, the size, or the shape of a body.
  • Forces are of two main types: contact forces and non-contact forces.

2. Units of Force

  • The C.G.S. unit of force is dyne.
  • The S.I. unit of force is newton.
  • One dyne produces acceleration of 1 cm/s^2 on 1 gram mass.

3. Newton's Laws of Motion and Equations of Motion

  • Newton’s first law is also called the law of inertia.
  • A body remains in its present state until an external force is applied on it.
  • Newton’s second law states that the rate of change of momentum is proportional to the applied force.

4. Motion, Moment of Force, Couple, and Equilibrium

  • Motion is a change in the state of a body with respect to its surroundings.
  • Translational motion is motion in a straight line in the direction of force.
  • Rotational motion is motion when a body turns about a fixed point or axis.
