Topics in Refraction through a lens

1

Types of Lenses and Their Properties

  • A lens is a transparent homogeneous refracting medium bounded by two curved surfaces
  • Convex lens (converging lens): Thick in middle, thin at edges - converges light rays
  • Concave lens (diverging lens): Thin in middle, thick at edges - diverges light rays
2

Ray Diagrams and Image Formation

  • Three principal rays for ray diagrams: (1) Ray through optical centre - no deviation, (2) Ray parallel to axis - passes through focus, (3) Ray through focus - becomes parallel
  • Real image: Rays actually meet, can be obtained on screen, always inverted
  • Virtual image: Rays appear to meet, cannot be obtained on screen, always erect
3

Image Formation by Convex Lens

  • Object at infinity: Real, inverted, highly diminished image at F2
  • Object beyond 2F1: Real, inverted, diminished image between F2 and 2F2
  • Object at 2F1: Real, inverted, same size image at 2F2
4

Sign Convention and Lens Formula

  • Optical centre is taken as origin of coordinate system
  • All distances measured in direction of incident light are positive
  • Object distance (u) is always negative for real objects
