Topics in Calorimetry

1

Heat, Temperature and Units of Heat

  • Heat is energy in transit due to random molecular motion.
  • Heat flows from a hot body to a cold body.
  • Temperature determines the direction of heat flow.
2

Heat Capacity and Specific Heat Capacity

  • Quantity of heat depends on mass, nature of material, and change in temperature.
  • Heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of the whole mass of a body by 1°C or 1 K.
  • Specific heat capacity is the heat required to raise the temperature of unit mass of a body by 1°C or 1 K.
3

Calorimeter and Principle of Calorimetry

  • A calorimeter is a cylindrical copper vessel used to measure heat lost or gained.
  • It is made of copper because copper is a good conductor and has very low specific heat.
  • A calorimeter is kept in a wooden box with insulating material to reduce heat loss.
4

Specific Heat Capacity by Method of Mixtures and Electric Method

  • The specific heat capacity of a solid can be found by the method of mixtures.
  • In this method, a heated solid is placed in water inside a calorimeter and the final temperature is measured.
  • Heat lost by the solid equals heat gained by water and calorimeter.
