  • A machine is a device used to overcome a large load by applying a smaller effort at a suitable point.
  • A machine may also give gain in speed.
  • Machines are classified as simple machines and complex machines.

2. Mechanical Advantage, Velocity Ratio, and Efficiency

  • Mechanical advantage shows how much a machine multiplies force.
  • A machine with M.A. greater than 1 is a force multiplier.
  • A machine with M.A. less than 1 is a speed multiplier.

3. Principle of Machine and Principle of Lever

  • In a machine, energy is supplied by effort and useful work is done on the load.
  • Input energy equals work done at the effort point.
  • Output energy equals work done at the load.

4. Classes of Levers and Their Examples

  • In class I levers, the fulcrum lies between load and effort.
  • In class I levers, load and effort act in the same direction.
  • In class I levers, M.A. and V.R. can be less than 1, equal to 1, or greater than 1.
