1. Scalar and Vector Quantities
- Scalar quantities have only magnitude and no direction.
- Scalars follow ordinary algebra for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Examples of scalars include mass, distance, time, speed, volume, density, pressure, work, energy, power, charge, electric current, temperature, potential, specific heat, and frequency.
2. Types of Vectors and Basic Properties
- Polar vectors have a well-defined starting point.
- Polar vectors reverse sign when coordinate axes are reversed.
- Examples of polar vectors include displacement, velocity, radius vector, and force.
3. Vector Addition and Subtraction
- Triangle law states that if two vectors are represented by two sides of a triangle in the same order, the resultant is the third side in the opposite order.
- Parallelogram law states that if two vectors are represented by adjacent sides of a parallelogram from the same point, the resultant is the diagonal from that point.
- Vector addition is commutative: A + B = B + A.
4. Unit Vector and Resolution of Vectors
- A unit vector has magnitude 1.
