Topics in Newton's Laws of Motion
1. Force and Inertia
- Force is an external push or pull that changes or tends to change the state of rest or uniform motion of a body along a straight line.
- Force is the basic cause of motion.
- Forces are of two main types: contact forces and non-contact forces.
2. Newton's First Law and Linear Momentum
- Newton's first law states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed in the same direction unless acted upon by an external unbala
- Newton's first law is also called the law of inertia.
- The first law gives a qualitative definition of force.
3. Newton's Second Law, Force, Units, and Impulse
- Newton's second law states that the rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and this change takes place in the direction of the applied force.
- This law is the quantitative law of motion.
- It gives the relation F = ma for constant mass.
4. Newton's Third Law and Conservation of Momentum
- Newton's third law states that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
- Action and reaction forces always act on different bodies.
- Action and reaction never cancel each other because they do not act on the same body.
