Topics in Waves

1

1. Nature of Wave Motion

  • Wave motion is a disturbance produced in a physical medium which advances with a definite speed without changing its form.
  • For propagation of mechanical waves, a material medium having elasticity and inertia is necessary.
  • In wave motion, the particles of the medium do not move from one place to another; they only oscillate about their equilibrium positions.
2

2. Types of Waves

  • Transverse wave: medium particles oscillate perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
  • Longitudinal wave: medium particles oscillate parallel to the direction of propagation.
  • Light waves are transverse waves.
3

3. Basic Terms and Relations

  • Amplitude is the maximum displacement of an oscillating particle on either side of its equilibrium position.
  • Time period is the time taken by a medium particle to complete one oscillation.
  • Frequency is the number of oscillations made by a medium particle in 1 second.
4

4. Progressive Wave Equation

  • A plane progressive wave propagates continuously in the same direction without change in amplitude.
  • A plane progressive simple harmonic wave is a plane progressive wave in which particles perform simple harmonic motion.
  • For a wave travelling in the positive X-direction, the displacement equation is y = a sin(ωt - kx).
