1. Fluid, Thrust, and Pressure
- A fluid has no definite shape of its own and takes the shape of its container.
- Fluids include both liquids and gases.
- Solids resist shearing stress strongly, but fluids offer very little resistance to shearing stress.
2. Pressure Due to a Liquid Column
- The pressure exerted by a liquid column depends on depth and density only.
- It does not depend on the shape of the container or the amount of liquid in it.
- Pressure at the same depth in the same liquid is the same at all points.
3. Pascal’s Law and Hydraulic Devices
- Pascal’s law states that pressure in a fluid in equilibrium is the same everywhere if the effect of gravity can be neglected.
- If pressure is increased in one part of an enclosed liquid, it is transmitted equally to all parts of the liquid.
- A small force on a small piston can produce a large force on a larger piston.
4. Effect of Gravity, Atmospheric Pressure, and Hydrostatic Paradox
- Gravity makes pressure increase with depth in a liquid.
- Liquid pressure is the same at all points at the same depth.
- The liquid pressure at depth h is greater than atmospheric pressure by ρgh.
