- Staff separation means an employee leaving the organisation.
- It is also called attrition.
- Separation may happen due to retirement, resignation, suspension, dismissal, retrenchment, layoff, and death.
2. Means of Staff Separation
- The main means of staff separation are retirement, layoff, retrenchment, resignation, suspension, and dismissal.
- Each means has a different cause and legal or organisational effect.
- A good answer should clearly distinguish temporary separation from permanent separation.
3. Retirement
- Retirement means separation on attaining age of superannuation, before superannuation under an incentive scheme, or due to disease or disability.
- Compulsory retirement happens on attaining the retirement age fixed in the contract.
- In Government service, the retirement age is 60 years.
4. Layoff
- Layoff is temporary removal of an employee from the payroll due to circumstances beyond the control of the employer.
- The employer-employee relationship does not come to an end during layoff.
- The worker is expected to be called back in future.
