  • It is also called attrition.
  • Separation may happen due to retirement, resignation, suspension, dismissal, retrenchment, layoff, and death.

  • The main means of staff separation are retirement, layoff, retrenchment, resignation, suspension, and dismissal.
  • Each means has a different cause and legal or organisational effect.

3. Retirement

  • Retirement means separation on attaining age of superannuation, before superannuation under an incentive scheme, or due to disease or disability.
  • Compulsory retirement happens on attaining the retirement age fixed in the contract.
  • In Government service, the retirement age is 60 years.

4. Layoff

  • Layoff is temporary removal of an employee from the payroll due to circumstances beyond the control of the employer.
  • The employer-employee relationship does not come to an end during layoff.
  • The worker is expected to be called back in future.
