  • The 1911 revolution began among soldiers in Wuchang in October 1911.
  • Puyi, the child emperor, was only five years old at the time.
  • The revolution led to the abdication of Puyi and the end of the Manchu dynasty.

3. Twenty-One Demands and Anti-Japanese Feeling

  • During the First World War, Japan tried to expand its influence in China.
  • The Twenty-One Demands were made in 1915 and were divided into five groups.
  • The agreement signed on 25 May 1915 accepted the demands minus group five.

4. May the Fourth Movement and Confucianism

  • The May the Fourth Movement began in 1919 with a huge student demonstration in Beijing.
  • The protest was against the warlords and traditional Chinese culture.
  • The Versailles settlement of 1919 recognized Japan’s right to take over Germany’s concessions in Shantung, angering China.
