1. From Empire to Republic, 1918-1919
- The Kaiser abdicated and fled to Holland in November 1918 as revolution broke out.

- Friedrich Ebert, leader of the left-wing Social Democrat Party, became head of government after the Kaiser’s abdication and later became the first President of the Weimar Republic.

- Communists attempted to seize power even before the January 1919 elections.
- The Spartacist Rising of January 1919 was a left-wing communist uprising against the Weimar government.
- Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg led the Spartacist Rising and were clubbed to death by Freikorps members without fair trial.
3. Economic Crisis, Inflation and Recovery
- The mark’s exchange rate at the end of World War I was 20 to the pound/dollar and later collapsed catastrophically.
